2ND FESTIVAL OF GERMAN CINEMA IN CHINA

CHINA, 2014

Renowned German actors and filmmakers as Volker Schlöndorff traveled last year to China to participate on the first “Festival of German Cinema” that was cheerfully enjoyed by various movie enthusiasts and film experts not only from China. In November 2014, German Films and the Goethe-Institut are hosting the “2nd Festival of German Cinema” in China. The festival will present a selection of this year’s and last year’s most important German film productions in the Chinese metropolises of Beijing, Chengdu, Shenzhen and Hangzhou. Prominent actors and filmmakers from Germany will come once more to China to present their movies in front of a broad Chinese audience. Joint workshops, roundtable discussions and further exclusive events accompany the festival to provide new opportunities for young and experienced filmmakers from Germany and China. The 2nd Festival of German Cinema in China does not only enhance the mutual understanding and fosters the continued strengthening of the dialogue between the German and Chinese cultural industries but also creates an open space to learn from the film industry's experts and aspiring professionals.

GREETINGS FROM THE GERMAN AMBASSADOR TO CHINA MICHAEL CLAUSS

Film is now both a form of art and a form of mass media. This has in-creased the diversity of contemporary film. In Germany, film has a long tradition. Its success story dates back to around 1900, when still images “learned to move”. The renowned film festival “Berlinale” demonstrates the importance attached to film in Germany today.

Films are particularly well suited to convey social and cultural developments. In relations between countries, they constitute an excellent means to foster mutual understanding and to bring people closer together. Films thus form a central element of our bilateral cultural activities. The importance of culture in our partnership with China was just reaffirmed at the highest political level during the intergovernmental consultations held in October in Berlin.

This Second Festival of German Cinema, presented by the Goethe-Institut and German Films, in cooperation with their partners, brings the cultural diversity of contemporary German film to China. The festival opens a window on Germany and also showcases the vibrancy and high quality of German film.

I am grateful to Doris Dörrie for her commitment and patronage of the Second Festival of German Cinema in China. I welcome our audiences in Beijing, Chengdu, Hangzhou and Shenzhen, and I invite you all to watch and discuss the films screened at the festival.

Michael Clauss, the German Ambassador to China

GREETINGS FROM DORIS DÖRRIE

To me, film-making is a lot like cooking. It needs the right ingredients, patience and love, tradition and improvisation. There’s a German saying, “Was der Bauer nicht kennt, das isst er nicht” (i.e. what the farmer doesn’t know, he won’t eat). This means that we first regard something unfamiliar with suspicion and are often not easily persuaded to try it. It’s the same with culture as with food. The thing is first of all to try it and then see if you like it. I have tried a lot of Chinese food in my life and through it, I know a little about how life might possibly taste here. We perceive culture with our five senses, not just with our heads. I would therefore like to invite you to try a few German films, to see if you like them, whether they taste good, whether you’d like seconds or even more. Our tongue is cautious and in the end unerring. Nobody can tell us what tastes good to us. We have to try it out for ourselves. Our own taste is what decides, not what the cook has decided for us. So, “Guten Appetit” at the festival of German film – for my part, I’ll be eating as much as I possibly can in the time I’m here.

Doris Dörrie
