THE FESTIVAL OF GERMAN CINEMA

CHINA, 2013

The Festival of German Cinema – China, 2013, displays contemporary German movies to the general Chinese public. Renowned filmmakers and actors from Germany will travel to China to personally introduce their films to Chinese audiences. Workshops and panels that accompany the Festival provide opportunities for both young and experienced filmmakers from Germany and China to exchange knowledge and initiate mutual projects. The Festival of German Cinema – China, 2013, brings together the German and Chinese film industries, enhances mutual understanding and fosters the continued strengthening of the dialogue between the German and Chinese cultural industries.

WELCOMING WORDS FROM VOLKER SCHLÖNDORFF

When the first films by Zhang Yimou and Chen Kaige, Jia Zhangke and Wang Quan’an came to Europe, their vitality, aesthetic radicalness, and the way people appeared to leap through the screen seemed like a new beginning of cinematography to me. Years later I was told that this generation of Chinese filmmakers admired THE TIN DRUM when they were in film school. Might this be true or not, but I was proud nonetheless, because I could already feel an artistic kinship when first watching their films. And then, one day Jiang Wen came to Babelsberg with a half-finished film and a suitcase full of audio tapes, and I became co-producer to his film IN THE HEAT OF THE SUN.

Everything I know about China I learned from films and from my wife Angelika, who has been studying Chinese language and culture for as long as I know her. The Chinese translation of my autobiography LIGHT, SHADOW AND MOVEMENT will tell my Chinese friends something about me – perhaps a bit too much to convey over such a great cultural distance though. New and old German films will show how vital and diverse German cinematography is, ranging from the beginning of the New German Film to today’s Berlin School. I am honored to introduce this film series and happy to be able to personally experience China. Upon entering this huge country I already felt like a dwarf, just like little Oskar.

WELCOMING WORDS FROM WANG QUAN'AN

If I ask the Chinese people who appreciate life, what Germany is most famous for, I think most of them would say Audi, Mercedes-Benz, and BMW. If you ask Chinese people who appreciate films, which German movie is most famous, I think most of them would say "The Tin Drum."

The first festival of German cinema brings Mr Schloendorff, the director of this film and also an idol of mine, together with other German films and filmmakers to our Chinese audience. It is our honor to have all of them here with us.

So lets enjoy a journey through Germany through these wonderful German films, and salute our German film counterparts and colleagues.  We wish them a great trip through China, and I hope they will enjoy all the good food here.

We wish the festival a big success!
Wang Quan’an, Director, Honorary Patron
